The Kid Way of Celebrating Independence Day
With Independence just around the corner, families and friends will gather together once again to celebrate one of the most important days in the history of our great nation.
While the food and fireworks are typically the highlight of the entire day, there are other activities you can introduce on this festive day to help keep everyone occupied and having fun. Especially the kids.
Independence Day Games
Keeping the kids occupied and entertained on any holiday can be difficult, so games on the 4th of July are one of the best ways you can accomplish this.
One of the many patriotic infused games you can play with the kids on this day is a flag relay. Gather enough small American flags for everyone and split the kids into two teams and have a bucket of sand for each team on the other side of the yard. When you say go, the first kid in line runs down and places their flag in the bucket. They must then march back and tag their teammate who will then repeat the process until one team has all their flags in the bucket.
4th of July Bike Parade
The 4th of July is always highlighted by big parades and grand celebrations. So why not create your festivities with a good old-fashioned bike parade.
Decorate your kid's bikes to the nines and put on as much American gear and decorations as you can to get them into the spirit. Mini flags on the backs of seats, red, white, and blue streamers off the handlebars, and letting them do some decorations of their own with colored construction paper are great ways to get their bikes looking as festive as possible.
Patriotic Desserts
Other than the barbecue, desserts and sweets are likely the most popularly consumed items on Independence Day. Kids will enjoy it, so get them into the kitchen with you to make some classic American treats as well as festive red, white, and blue sweets.
You can never go wrong with a traditional Apple Pie on the 4th of July, and decorating any cookies and cakes in red, white, and blue frosting is sure to make your desserts a hit with everyone.
Fun American History
While the 4th of July today is focused on fun and pageantry, it is important to never forget the reasons we truly celebrate it and why we have the opportunity to do so.
This is a great time to teach your kids a little about the Declaration of Independence and what it really means. A great way to do so is to print out a copy online and tell them about certain parts of it. You can also point out some famous names they may recognize from school to really help them connect the dots.
